Virtual Reality Capture

Concept

For Facebook's Oculus 6 Conference, I created a presentation that was used to demonstrate virtual reality capture using the Quest headset. The nature of this project meant strict timelines and managing multiple moving pieces. I was the sole designer and worked with engineers, product managers, legal team, communications team, recording studio, and more.

Tasks

  • Translate complex material into clear and engaging visual representations

  • Develop illustrated animations and other visual assets as per Oculus brand guidelines

  • Manage and collaborate with cross-functional team members to ensure timeline progression

  • Assist with onsite conference logistics and behind-the-scenes sound and visual tech

Purpose

Facebook holds an annual conference to showcase updates and developer features for VR & AR. My presentation was among the most highly anticipated and is one of the most-watched sessions of the conference.

Message Clarity

Given the complex content material, designing for audience understanding was a priority— the essential task being to simplify down to main ideas without losing important points. This quickly became apparent in a series of flowcharts that represent the organizational structure of how mixed reality is captured. Because the flowcharts would serve as a guideline for other talking points throughout the presentation, they had to serve as a visual anchor. However, there were many moving parts, including highlighting certain sections one at a time, animating the sequential flow of steps, labeling the processes, segregating colors/shapes, and of course, adhering to the brand style.

Iterations

The first iterations were simply for flushing out the structure and balancing informational input from various teams. It became essential to make the pieces of the chart clearly defined without overcrowding them with information. Creating a visual language for repeating pieces became necessary. Icons were appealing but ended up not working visually.

 

For the final version, text labels only appeared when necessary to avoid cluttering the charts; simplified shapes with text were preferred over icons to keep attention on the material rather than distracting the viewer with the design; animations played a large role in communicating the overarching sequence rather than static images which were too confusing to view all at once.

Brand Guidelines & Assets

The OC6 visual identity is a dark geometric theme using three main colors, secondary grey and white neutral colors, and a signature paint pattern. This visual system was used consistently across all of the graphic assets created for the conference, and my role as a designer was to make sure everything I created matched this visual identity.

Video Capture

Mixed reality footage was captured at the on-campus recording studio at Menlo Park. The green screen has tape markings for the camera to calibrate the person's location and overlay the VR recording behind the video of the person. These recordings were used in the final presentation.

Onsite Support

I attended speaker rehearsals to ensure the slide timings, transitions, and animations proceeded smoothly and made changes as necessary. In addition, I provided assistance for the tech booth during the event to oversee that the sounds and visuals played properly when presenting.
